Geriatric Nurse Practitioner

Who They Are and What They Do…

A geriatric nurse practitioner (GNP) is a certified advance practice registered nurse (RN) with graduate preparation that specializes in the care of older adults. GNPs may work independently or collaboratively with physicians (state regulations vary). They can benefit an AL community by promoting staff education and disease surveillance to enhance overall quality of care.

GNP Focus

  • Experts in managing common geriatric needs: confusion, falls, incontinence, and decreased mobility
  • Most have prescriptive and admitting privileges
  • Assess, diagnose, and treat acute episodic conditions (pneumonia, etc.)
  • Manage chronic diseases (diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, etc.)

GNPs are board certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). GNPs can join the Gerontological Advanced Practitioner Nurses Association (GAPNA) which has several chapters across the country. Visit www.gapna.org for more information about local chapters. *
